who are you? trine andersen, 36 years, married to martin, mother to august and expecting my second child
what do you work with? I am the founder and designer of ferm LIVING. ferm LIVING draws on scandinavian design traditions and retro charm – but with a distinctive graphic edge that makes every item firmly contemporary. ferm LIVING is rooted in denmark, where I founded a graphic design studio in 2005. the decision to start my own business sprang from a personal vision of a bird on a branch, ready to take off. that bird remains a part of the ferm LIVING logo today
ferm LIVING soon expanded into design and interior products. as i found myself unable to find wallpaper with the kind of graphic design I wanted, I took matters into my own hands – and my first wallpaper collection was launched in february 2006. within the ferm LIVING ”house”, you will find products for every room in your home. the range includes wallpaper, textiles, decorative objects, wallstickers, designs for the kitchen, bathroom and office as well as a large collection for kids.
the name ”ferm” was actually inspired by my grandmother. when she said that someone was “ferm på fingrene” – i.e. skilled with their hands, literally “good with their fingers” – it was high praise indeed
what inspires you? i get this question a lot… and I think it is very difficult to answer. i like to think of it in this way: everything inspires me – everything I see and experiences goes though a filter in my brain – some of it is “stored”, and when you put these “stored” impressions together they might end up in a product or an idea some day. I, of course, seeks inspiration on traditional manners when I travel, read magazines and books, source for vintage objects, walk in the nature and through my friends
favourite items on your desk ? my wacom tablet and my ferm LIVING brass pencil holder and tray
what is the most important item on your desk, besides your computer, that you cant live without? my to-do list which I am totally lost with out
show us your current mood board:
where is your creative spot? the ferm LIVING studio with my desk and our 5 meter long pin board with all our product development. often the floor around my desk is also one big mess with samples, prints and piles of “to-do’s”
wishful thinking. what is your dream item for the office desk? a new desk chair – but that is a big wish; if I get a new chair all my colleagues should have one too, so it would be a rather big investment
what does a normal day look like at your office? i arrive at the office between 8-8.30. i normally start with a cup of tea and crispbread and start checking emails. the rest of the day is normally packed with meetings, they can vary a lot in time and subject – these meetings can be both design or operation-oriented
what is your life philosophy? hmm – the first one that pops into my head is: work hard a be nice to people…it’s very simple and a little bit naive – but I like simple!
